Tips and tricks for TypeScript programming

Tips and tricks for TypeScript programming

These three TypeScript tips and tricks are useful for people who are new to TypeScript or for Java developers who are moving into JavaScript.

The preferred programming language for many online apps is becoming TypeScript. It lets JavaScript-versed developers write code based on the fundamental ideas and procedures of the object-oriented programming paradigm.

Strong-type programming languages like TypeScript support every functionality present in object-oriented languages like Java and C#. For instance, TypeScript allows you to program against an interface, yet JavaScript does not support interfaces.

TypeScript code is written by programmers in an IDE or on its own, and it is subsequently translated into JavaScript by a TypeScript compiler. After that, the JavaScript is made available for server-side implementation with Node.js and browser use.

The primary advantage of utilizing TypeScript is its ability to stop developers from releasing code that is flawed. Finding design-time mistakes in the code is one step in the TypeScript compilation process, which comes before the code is converted to JavaScript. Additionally, developers using TypeScript can benefit from the code practices that come with being a tightly typed language.

Let's examine each in more detail.

1. To confine string values, consider using an enum or custom type.

For developers, making sure a string variable has the right value allocated to it can be a tedious operation. For instance, depending on the logic of the program in which the variable is declared, assigning the value asparagus to the variable animal: string is not only erroneous but also may result in runtime errors.

Within that little piece of code, Apple is a special type that stands for Apple, Orange, or Cherry, and Vegetable is a custom type that stands for Lettuce, Carrot, Radish, or Potato.

An elegant and simple shorthand method is to define a custom type that constrains the values assignable to variables of that type.

2. Use instanceof rather than just typeof

A variable's type can be ascertained using the typeof operator. When you want to make sure that a variable is a number, for instance, you can use typeof.

JavaScript has included the typeof operator since its inception. Because TypeScript is developed "on top of" JavaScript, it is therefore also available in TypeScript.

But sort of has its restrictions. First of all, it only looks for the following fundamental JavaScript types: Function, BigInt, Number, Boolean, Undefined, Null, String, and Symbol. Moreover, a string is the typeof return value, as the example below shows:

They answer with "Number."

Additionally, there are restrictions on the use of the typeof operator in TypeScript, especially when it comes to bespoke TypeScript classes. Examine the following instance:

The following is what console.log() produces:

It should be noted that typeof is limited to reporting only one of the fundamental JavaScript types, object in the instance of the bird variable. The TypeScript custom class that Bird generated is not understood by the typeof operator.

The TypeScript instanceof operator does comprehend, though.

How to use the TypeScript instanceof operator on the above-declared variable bird is shown in the example that follows. In a console.log() command, the following is the execution of the statement bird instanceof Bird:

The output from console.log() looks like this:

It is evident that the variable bird is, in fact, an instance of the class Bird, as reported by the instanceof operator.

The following is the outcome that console.log() printed:

Since the variable "bird" is not an instance of the class Dog, the outcome makes sense.

The instanceof operator can only produce True or False results. It won't work to execute instanceof like this:

Rather, you need to specify the class that you want to test the relevant variable against.

The instanceof operator is a strong tool for working with a custom TypeScript class, even with this drawback. In comparison to the JavaScript kind of operator, the instanceof operator offers a finer level of scrutiny.

3. To run a loop indefinitely, use for(;;) rather than while.

This last piece of advice isn't unique to TypeScript, but it offers an alternative to running code continually inside of a while loop.

You can run an infinite loop with that code just fine. Still, there is a different approach, which goes like this:

The aforementioned example makes use of a for loop whose declaration has no conditions. It is not superior to or inferior to use a for loop. It's just an alternative method.

Advanced object-oriented programming concepts and techniques can be used to TypeScript code by developers who are familiar with JavaScript. They can thus take advantage of a greater number of the functionalities offered by object-oriented programming languages like Java and C#.

Just a handful of the numerous things you can do using TypeScript to increase the effectiveness, efficiency, and enjoyment of your programming endeavors are illustrated by the advice provided in this article. Though there's always more to learn, hopefully these pointers prove helpful right away.
