Why (and How) I Learned Web Development as a Data Scientist

I met a man who worked for Apple in marketing a few months ago. He looked astonished when I informed him I was a data scientist.
I had never really considered my work to be limited to backend tasks, so I was taken aback by this statement. We became accustomed to thinking of AI as the defining technology of our time, the center of the tech solar system, when we were immersed in the Data Science/AI hype bubble.
My friend, let's call him Copernicus, pointed out to me that AI is not the universe's center, but rather merely one piece of the puzzle for people who are not within the hype bubble. This piqued my interest in trying to understand more about the other planets in the solar system, and I ultimately made the decision to study web development for four reasons:
